Let`s continue about gardening with herb series. Now It`s Thyme.  Thyme is a deliciously, fragrant plant that has often been referred to as the herb of courage and happiness. A cup of Thyme soup was once used to cure a person of shyness. The botanical name of Thyme is Thymus. The plant, with its numerous varieties, is native to the Mediterranean area.

All varieties are low growing and require the same culture indoors. The favored culinary variety is the common English Thyme. These plants are also used in landscaping, where their small mounding growth habit makes a delightful addition to most beds. It is a “plant supreme” indoors, as a pot plant, or in small hanging basket at your windows sill.

Give Thyme a sunny area and water it only when it has become dry. Bathe it monthly with solution of one tablespoon diswashing detergent to one-pint of water. The soil mixture should contain equal parts sand, soil and peat moss. Add one-half cup of small gravel and one-half cup of dried cow manure to one quart of this soul mixture. New plants can be started easily from cuttings or from seeds.

Thyme is a lover of humidity which can be provided by misting the plants or by placing the pot on a bed of gravel that us kept moist. The plant has trailing growth habit indoors and should be clipped often to keep in compact.
